Why Your Hair Needs Exercise

Like every other part of your body, hair follicles are fed by nutrients from the bloodstream.  Good circulation of blood and proper nutrients carried in it are essential to good health, and that includes the health and growth of your hair.  The more stimulation via blood flow and the oxygen and food that blood supplies to your follicles, the more (and healthier) hair you’re likely to grow.

There are a few time-honoured tips for keeping healthy hair, and to grow more of it.  Though nothing substitutes for a balanced diet and physical exercise of the entire body, here are some suggestions for ‘exercising your hair’ that may not have occurred to you before.  None are guaranteed, of course, but results have been positive in many cases, according to reports from some in the medical profession – and some who have actually tried them.

Stand on your head for 30 seconds to a minute every day, or failing that, lie on the bed and hang your head and shoulders over the edge.  No, this is not for anyone with high or low blood pressure, or if you’re not in good physical shape otherwise.  In fact anyone over the age of young adulthood should check with his or her physician before making this move.  But yes, the position does increase blood flow, therefore oxygen, etc. to hair follicles, not to mention promoting a bit of gymnastic ability.

Another suggestion is scalp massage, five minutes a day, using any of several oils like baby oil, olive oil and sesame oil.  Even without the oily treatment, the massage will increase circulation and nutrients to hair follicles.

Don’t carry it to extremes, but pulling your hair can be good for it.  The idea is to take a handful of hair and tug gently, moving from one spot to another over the whole scalp.  Gentle pulling can supposedly strengthen the roots of the hair.
