Melanin – can eating well stave off grey hair?

While going grey is a process that is a natural one and will affect everybody, lifestyle habits as well as appropriate nutrition can help in staving off this occurrence by some years. In addition to lifestyle changes and correct dietary habits, the avoidance of stress is also crucial to ensure your hair does not start graying prematurely.

It has to be understood here that the cause of grey hair is because of the absence of a compound called melanin. This substance lends colour to your hair and as long as it is produced in enough quantity, your hair will retain its original colour and not have traces of grey in it.  Melanin itself is manufactured out of an amino acid called tyrosine and hence boosting levels of tyrosine will ensure that you get the desired melanin level in your body. Since tyrosine is an amino acid, sufficient intake of proteins will do the trick for you.

Besides your food habits, lifestyle changes can also play a major role. In fact where you live and the climate you are exposed to would influence graying of hair to some extent. Human hair tends to remain healthier in hot and tropic weather as compared to colder climes since in the latter case, the circulation of blood and its flow to the scalp is inhibited to a great extent.

Having mentioned that it is vital to take in the right kind of food so that the nutrients can boost the production of melanin, it is necessary to understand that these nutrients have to reach the right areas in your scalp as well to ensure you have healthy hair. Just eating right may not serve the purpose if the nutrients cannot be transported to the areas which require them the most. That can be achieved only through proper blood circulation to the scalp.

So how do you make that happen?

Well, you need to do the following:

  • Make sure you exercise every day to get the blood flow within the body going
  • Gently massage your scalp for about 10 minutes using your fingertips. You will feel some heat within your head and that will boost blood circulation.
  • Indulge in a sauna once every couple of months.
  • Increase your intake of proteins to get the benefit of essential as well as non essential amino acids
  • Avoid stress and tension. Meditate daily for about 5 minutes to achieve a state of mental relaxation.

The above life style changes in combination with the right food will ensure that enough melanin is produced which will help stave off grey hair.
