Hair Care for DreadHeads

Take Care Of Your Dreadlocks

Now that you have your dreadlocks, it is necessary to take good care of them so that they continue to look good. You may do it either yourself or utilise the assistance of a good hair stylist. Do not, however, at any time feel that you can get by without maintaining them.

The choice is between spending money, or spending time. When you engage the services of a professional stylist you will have to pay them. When you do it yourself, you have to devote time and effort.

Dreadlock maintenance is ideally well left to the stylist, referred to as a loctician. They are somebody who has thorough knowledge about this hairstyle, and a lot of it is normally picked up through experience rather than any formal course in hair styling or cosmetology.

A good loctician would be able to present your styled or coloured dreadlocks in a manner that looks good. The advantage of using the services of a professional to maintain your dreadlocks is that they can help them acquire strength and durability. After all, you are in this for the long haul and want them to appear fresh and healthy at all times. The only drawback could be the high charges of such an expert and the possibility that you are not too comfortable in a salon environment. Moreover, you still have to take care of your hair in between the visits, and cannot leave it totally to the loctician.

On the other hand, when you decide to take care of the maintenance yourself, you have to be aware of the right maintenance routine and products that can be used to ensure that you are not causing your hair any damage. As long as you are clear about this, you can definitely go ahead and care for your dreadlocks on your own.

Styles for Ultra-Curly Hair

When you have ultra-curly hair, you might think all is hopeless. It feels far too big of a task to take on due to how unmanageable it is at times. This leads you to straightening it, cutting it, and going to great lengths to make it easier to style. The truth of the matter is, though, that you can style even your ultra-curly hair. Not in the same way that someone with straight hair could, and, in some cases, it might take a little more effort, but it is still possible. You can also find incredibly simple styles that make use of the natural beauty that you have with curls.

One of the best options for curly hair is to simply let it flow naturally. Grow it out and let it out. Curls can look magnificent when flowing freely, especially when maintained properly. Regular conditioning of the hair as well as avoiding heat, over brushing, and too much styling can help immensely. You hair will have the soft, elegant look that you want with it. Ultra-curly hair already has the perfect look for a relaxed, brought down style. Of course, there are plenty of ways to style this type of curly hair, too. These styles will make the most out of the curls.

If you like keeping your hair down, going bohemian is a great choice. This typically makes use of accessories to get that “hippie” look. It is relaxed, it is comfortable, and it looks good, especially with natural curls. You can also put your hair into ponytails and buns. With basic straight hair, ponytails and buns do not have a lot to them. However, curled hair adds some personality to these simple styles. You can go for a basic ponytail as well as any type of bun, like side or back. A great thing about buns is that you can let some small curls hang at the front and sides, adding to the overall appearance.

To get a specific style, you should look for help from stylists. A stylist can give you the assistance and guidance that you need to style your ultra-curly hair as much as you want. While it will cost you money to have your hair styled, knowing what to do the next time that you want a detailed, specific, or complicated style is helpful. If you want a special style for an event, then this is something that you should do, anyway.

Your General Health and Your Hair

When it comes time to hit the gym and sweat it out most of us are thinking of our waistline, our cholesterol, or our heart rate. It is a bit unusual to consider our hair at this point, but believe it or not, our hair can tell a lot about our well being. It is really not that far out in left field. Our hair is directly related to our overall health. If we are constantly stressed out or thriving on a poor diet, it will show in more ways than one. Our hair is usually the silent victim.

Poor health equals unhealthy hair. Our hair needs proper nutrients just like any other part of our bodies. We have to trim away dead ends, wash, condition, and even moisturize to keep our hair at its best. Now I’m not going to get into the deep science of it but good healthy hair starts at the root. That’s never even been debated. That being said, proper nutrition, circulation, and hydration all work from the inside out.

For instance, high stress situations can cause hair loss. Of course it’s natural to lose some hair every time we clean or style our hair. If you notice more than just the norm, it could be an indication of something else. Sometimes thinning hair can be an indication of the onset of diabetes. If you have suffered a traumatic event, such as divorce or even something worse, your hair will start thinning on you. A vitamin deficiency can also cause hair loss or hair damage. Even a thyroid problem can show up in your hair. Dry brittle hair that breaks easily can be an indicator. Even limp hair deserves a second look.

This doesn’t mean that we need to run to the doctor because we are having a bad hair day. However, if we are otherwise pretty healthy and our hair is not, we may need to do a little digging. Eat your greens, take your vitamins, do your cardio, and drink plenty of water. If you are doing all of these things and your hair is still limp, fine and brittle, or falling out then there may be more to it. Whether we like it or not, our hair is a direct indicator of our inner health. What goes in, must come out, and it will come out in our hair. While it is not necessary to examine every falling strand, don’t take your lovely locks for granted. Pay attention to your hair.

Do’s and Don’ts of Moisturizing Your Hair

Weather your hair is long or short, straight or curly, we all have one thing in common. We need to moisturize. When someone says the word moisturize, most of us think of skin, but the reality is that our hair needs it too. Between extreme climate conditions and abrasive styling treatments, our lovely locks are screaming for a little down time to rejuvenate, re-energize, and rebuild. With that being said, let’s explore some of the most important do’s and don’ts of moisturizing our hair.

Don’t

Don’t over wash your hair. Most of us grew up learning to wash our hair every day but the truth is it just isn’t necessary. Too much washing can leave your hair feeling dry and brittle. If you are using a heavy or homemade moisturizer, don’t leave it in overnight. Your hair will reap all of the vital benefits in thirty to forty-five minutes and anything longer just equates to a bad night’s sleep and messy pillow cases. If you color your hair, reach for the box without ammonia. Our hair suffers enough between abrasive styling products, uv rays, and chlorinated water. If you heat style your hair often, you’ll want to opt for a heat protectant. It will help maintain moisture and prevent breakage. Don’t be afraid to wear a hat or just put your hair up every once in a while. Just like anything else, your hair will often benefit from a day off! Whatever you do, just don’t ignore your lovely locks.

Do

Do consider natural moisturizers in addition to your regular routine. Not only are they easy on the pocket book, most are nonabrasive and they will add volume in addition to reducing frizz. Natural products are readily available and easily adaptable to your hair type. Even when using market products, make sure to choose the right one for your hair type. You’ll also want to make sure to drink plenty of water and contemplate taking some vitamin supplements. Drinking enough water will give your hair that high gloss and lustrous shine. Adding B vitamins, folic acid, and magnesium to your diet will help keep your hair at its best. Styling oils, such as argan, can also do wonders for your moisturizing routine. Just be sure to use it on damp hair after your normal wash. You might even consider adding a little to your regular conditioner for super results even on wash days.

These are the basics. Of course, there are always the obvious. Try to use a wide toothed comb to keep breakage to a minimum. If you’re a brush person, please make sure your brush stays super clean. That junky build up in the bristles isn’t good for your hair. It will just weigh it down and make it harder for any of the moisturizers to be effective. When you do moisturize its best to do it after you shampoo. With a little purposeful consideration, your lovely locks will be loving you back in no time!

Blow Drying Hair

Regardless of the length of your hair, you probably blow dry it from time to time. Blow drying your hair allows you to get a specific look that you cannot get through other methods. There are some problems here, however. One of the biggest is that you may not get the look that you want if you do not blow dry your hair properly. You have to use exact methods if you want an exact style. Otherwise, you will not see the desired results. The other concern many have is the potential for damage. If you take care of your hair, and if you do this the right way, though, then you can get the look that you are after.

The right method of blow drying your hair depends on length and what you want. Typically, though, you will have to use a brush to blow dry in layers. How you do this changes with hair length. Short hair normally requires that you brush your hair up and blow dry, while longer hair will require that you brush your hair into rolls. You also have to keep in mind the style that you want. A messier style will call for a messier blow dry, but you have to be a bit more careful for elegant styles.

Do not forget that blow drying hair can also cause damage. The heat from the blow dryer will do quite a bit of damage to unprotected hair, which is why you want to start protecting it. Protecting your hair from the heat damage blow drying can cause requires a special product. A spray specifically for protecting the hair from heat will help immensely. This will avoid the various issues that heat can cause, and it does so without affecting your ability to blow dry your hair. You can still get the same results that you want, but with minimal damage caused.

To make sure that you get a specific style, especially if it is for an important event, you can always go to a stylist. To avoid issues with damaged hair and to figure out how to style your hair the way you want it styled, a professional stylist is likely your best option. This will ensure that you have access to information and guidance that you would not have had previously. Of course, if this is an everyday type of styling, there is no reason to go to a stylist every time.
